Waxing Questions And Answers

Q. Is Waxing right for me?

A. Waxing is appropriate for almost everyone. However, some physicians do not recommend it for people suffering from diabetes or who have varicose veins or poor circulation. Waxing should be avoided if you are currently using the following medications: Accutane and topicals that include Retin-A, Salicylic Acid, Glycolic Acid, Differin, Tazorac, Avage, Strivectin, Renova, ProActive, Avita, Benzoyl Peroxide. All of the above mentioned can enhance skin sensitivity that could lead to lifting of the skin when removing hair.

Q. What is a Brazilian?
A. The Brazilian wax originated in a place where beach thongs abound and the incredible rate at which it's sweeping the world can leave little doubt that there truly must be something special about it. The Brazilian wax basically takes it ALL away sometimes leaving just a tiny strip of closely shorn hair in the front (which is then referred to by some as a "landing strip", a "playboy" or inverted "v").

Q. What can I do to prepare for the Brazilian?
A. Taking Ibuprofen 1 hour prior to your visit and avoiding caffeine helps to reduce the pain factor. We also carry PFB topical anesthetic which can be applied 15-20 min. before your appointment.

Q. Does it hurt?
A. There is some pain involved, however most women find it quite tolerable. Our estheticians work quickly and because of our proprietary technique the pain is greatly minimized.

Q. How long should hair be?
A. Hair must be between 1/4 and 1/2 inch to be effectively removed. If hair is longer we will trim to the desired length.

Q. How long should I wait to get waxed after I’ve shaved?
A. 3 to 4 weeks is recommended or until all the hair is at least 1/4 of an inch or longer. This will ensure you achieve the best result possible.

Q. Is it OK to shave between wax appointments?
A. Waxing slows down and reduces hair growth. Hair also grows much thinner thus making it easier to remove and less painful when waxed. Shaving just one time in between will negate all that is gained from waxing and can further irritate follicles which can cause ingrown hair. So, no, we don’t advise shaving in between.

Q. How long will it last?
A. You should have 2 to 3 weeks of fairly smooth skin. We recommend booking appointments every 4 to 6 weeks.

Q. I'm on my period. Can I get waxed?
A. If possible, avoid scheduling your appointment just before or during your menstrual cycle. We recommend this only because we tend to be most sensitive during this time. However, if you're feeling brave we will wax you anytime you desire.

Q. What can I expect afterwards?
A. The waxed skin might be tender for a couple of days. We advise taking Ibuprofen to decrease inflammation and skin sensitivity. Skin may break out in tiny bumps, especially when waxed for the first time. This reaction is normal and clears up quickly. We recommend applying Hydrocortisone cream to speed healing.

Q. What can I do about ingrown hair?
A. Exfoliating in the shower with a loofah everyday helps to keep the skin free from cellular buildup which can trap hair. We carry PFB which helps to prevent and clear the skin of ingrown hair.

Q. What’s big deal about “double-dipping? Is waxing sanitary?
A. Double-Dipping is a common practice of many unethical salons. To cut costs, they dip used sticks repeatedly. This contaminates an entire wax container. Not so at the Beauty Utopia! Our waxing sticks are dipped into the wax Only once, applied to the client once, and then discarded. During a single waxing session, our professional Esthetician may use 20 sticks or more!

Q. Can I tan before or after I get waxed?
A. You should wait 3-5 days to get waxed after you have tanned. You should never get waxed if you are sunburned or even if skin is pink. The very top layer of skin could pull off or "lift" which is painful and can result in scabbing. You should wait for 3 days after you have waxed to tan. Waxed skin is more photosensitive and is more susceptible to burning.

Q. Do I need an appointment?
A. We do accept walk-ins however we recommend scheduling in advance so as to avoid an extended wait. Please be early or on time to avoid losing your appointment. If you’re unable to keep an appointment we appreciate calling within 24 hours prior if possible.
